Twitter will remove tens of millions of suspicious accounts from users’ followers.

The goal is to restore confidence in the service.

The reform aims at a very common form of cheating in social media, wrote the New York Times.

Many users blow up their number of followers with automated or fake accounts, thus giving an impression of influence to strengthen political activism, business or careers in the entertainment industry, according to the newspaper.

Twitter is beginning its efforts on Thursday.

It is expected that many users will see their number of followers fall. How many people are affected is not known, but it is expected that the measure will reduce the total number of followers in service by approximately 6%.
