The Ministry of Foreign Affairs is pleased that China will participate in the so-called Halden Reactor Project (HRP), but is careful not to interpret this as a softening of the relations between the countries.

MFA welcomes Chinese participation in research work in connection with the Halden reactor. Norway’s relations with China are not considered in this question, the   spokesman of the Foreign Ministry writes in an email to  the newspaper Aftenposten.
In the first place the civilian research center Shanghai Nuclear Engineering Research and Design Institute (SNERDI) will be joining the Norwegian-run nuclear safety project .
– Halden’s main objective is to increase the safety of nuclear power plants around the world. China is a country that makes a lot of new nuclear power. Because of this, it is important for us that they now have become members, so they can share in the data and knowledge we have developed in the HRP-operation,  project manager Margaret McGrath in Halden Project said.
The political relations between China and Norway have been frosty since the Chinese dissident Liu Xiaobo was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2010.
