UDI–Director Frode Forfang recently called for a completely new asylum system. Introducing the new system means that the current asylum law will be repealed.
Forfang believes the asylum debate in Norway is far too legalistic and thinks support for helping refugees will vanish if the people consider the asylum immigration not to be under control, the newspaper Klassekampen writes.
–It’s better if a larger part of the refugees arrive in Norway as a part of a quota than as individual asylum seekers. We will have more control, and the refugees will not have to risk a dangerous journey under the direction of human traffickers, “ Forfang said. He believes the current asylum law is not able to handle a very large number of asylum seekers.
–The reason is that there is no upper limit to the number of people who may apply for asylum in Norway. In principle, several tens of millions of refugees may come here to seek asylum. That the asylum applicants themselves may choose the where they want to go to, was the main reason that the asylum system in Europe broke down last year, Forfang says.
The UDI- Director says he believes in a holistic policy and international cooperation, which combines efforts in close areas and quota refugees to Europe with a better cooperation between the European countries. He believes that this cooperation has to take precedence to legalistic aspects.
–I think that the current discussions on this subject are far too legalistic, in a way that makes politicians and other important players lose sight of the main considerations for this issue, “ UDI Director Frode Forfang said.
