The United States wants a submarine harbor in Tromso

Having been without a submarine port by the Barrents Sea for years, the US wants to return to the north and wants to rent a port for nuclear submarines in Tromso.

– This clearly has a signal effect. The US shows a desire for more presence in the Arctic, says senior researcher Sverre Lodgaard by the Norwegian Institute of International Affairs to the newspaper Klassekampen. Because the defense has sold the submarine base Olavsvern, Americans must hire a civilian port of the Tromso municipality.

– This is no ordinary commercial agreement, and this not something the port manager can decide on their own. It must be treated in a political manner, said finance commissioner and Red politician Jens Ingvald Olsen.

He believes the civilian docks are too close to the buildings around and that it is not safe for the population, that the submarines with nuclear reactors lay by the open quay.

Olavsvern was closed in 2009 and sold in 2013. In addition, the coastal fort Grøtsundet where Americans would hire a quay has been sold. The fort, situated ten kilometers northeast of Tromso, currently belongs to the Tromso harbor.
