Wara says 521 Ethiopians could be returned to Ethiopia

The political situation in Ethiopia has improved so much that Attorney General,Tor Mikkel Wara believes 521 Ethiopian refugees may now be returned to their home country.

Ethiopia’s new prime minister, Abiy Ahmed, has released political prisoners and
opened dialogue with opposition groups. He took over power in the country in April this year. The increasing optimism in the African country may cause hundreds of Ethiopian refugees to return home.

This happens on the basis of a rule from 2016, which states that if it is less than
three years since asylum seekers received protection, one risks losing the right to stay if conditions in the home country are significantly improved.

“The situation in Ethiopia has every reason to pay close attention to. There are professional authorities such as the Immigration Directorate (UDI) and the Immigration Commission (UNE) who make the concrete assessments, but if it is better in Ethiopia, as we hope it stays, the need for protection will be lost,” said Wara to NRK news.

There have been fewer asylum seekers from Ethiopia to Norway in recent years, and so far this year, only eight Ethiopians have been granted asylum in Norway, while 35 people from the country have applied. Last year, 91 Ethiopians sought asylum in this country.

  1. Dear Sir,

Please inform the authorities or extend the news. Ethiopian condition is unpredictable. There is really internal conflict that could cause the country in danger.
