Whaling Commission adopted stricter controls

The International Whaling Commission has adopted a more stringent research monitoring of whales.

Norway, Iceland and Japan voted against the proposal, the only countries that still condone whaling. Most countries voted in favor of the proposal to have more stringent monitoring during whaling during the commission meeting in Portoroz in Slovenia on Thursday.

While Norwegian whalers are frustrated by the low quotas, environmentalists said that Norway should stop whaling completely. This year the Norwegian had quota of 880 whales which was around 400 fewer than in the past, according to NRK news.

Officially Japan joined commercial whaling in 1987, but critics say the country is using loopholes in the rules to continue whaling under the pretext that we are talking about research on whales.
