Søreide will explain the UN migration deal in Parliament

Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ine Eriksen Søreide (Conservatives), will next week inform the Norwegian Parliament on the UN migration deal. The agreement has created a divide in the Government.

The majority of the Parliament (Stortinget) has agreed that Norway will join the agreement, to protest from, among others, the Progress Party (Frp), who has issued their very first dissent in Government on the matter.

– In light of the political discussion on the UN migration platform, the Government wishes to provide a brief account to the Parliament, before the vote in the UN General Assembly on December 19th, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (UD) informs.

It is the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ine Eriksen Søreide (Conservatives), who will be responsible for the briefing. It is the website Document which first mentions the matter.

Not binding

The UD emphasises that the agreement is not legally binding for the international community and that it does not introduce any legal obligations. Nevertheless, resistance has been large in several countries, and some countries have decided to refrain from joining the agreement.

Among the Norwegian critics of the agreement is the editorial association, which reacts to formulations about «educate the press in the correct usage of phrases regarding migration».

– These are obviously problematic formulations. Public authorities should not instruct the media, it is not their task to train journalists in the use of sensitive language, says Deputy Secretary-General of Norwegian Editorial Association, Reidun K. Nybø, to Dagsavisen at the end of November.

Broad agreement

Prime Minister Erna Solberg (Conservatives) defended the adaptation to the agreement in a blog post on November 14th.

– This is the platform that has managed to reach a broad consensus internationally, and it will strengthen the possibility for further cooperation. Closer cooperation with the countries of origin will make our job to return those who have been rejected, easier, she writes.

The negotiations on the agreement will end at a UN conference in Morocco on December 10th, and the plan is that it will be adopted at a meeting of the UN General Assembly on December 19th.

This deal is the greatest abuse of power since Gro Harlem Bruntland signed Norway into the EU without telling the people, it is a disgrace!
