A woman in the Swiss city of Locarno was fined by police when she went clothed in a nikab in public.

In 2013 a majority in the canton of Ticino, in the Italian part of Switzerland, voted for a ban on garments covering the face, such as a burka or nikab. On Friday the 1st of July the ban came into effect.

The same day, Swiss Nora Illi, who converted to Islam in her teens and is a member of the Islamic Central Committee in Switzerland, was fined by Swiss police for using a nikab in public. How much she must pay is still uncertain, but it could be as much as 85,000 Norwegian kroner, writes The Independent.

She received the support of the French-Algerian businessman Rachid Nekkaz, who has objected to similar measures in Belgium and France. He was also fined for incitement to commit an illegal act.

Swiss politicians will not make exceptions for anyone, not even for tourists.
