A review of Norwegian mosque boards show that only three of the 248 members are women.
The review is made by Vårt Land and include boards of mosques in the Islamic Council of Norway’s lists.
– I knew there were very few women on the boards, but did not expect that there would be so few. Especially when we are talking so much about women and Islam, and have so many seminars on the subject, Faten Mahdi Al-Hussaini in JustUnity, working on the prevention of radicalization, says.
Professor Vibeke Blaker Strand at the Norwegian Centre for Human Rights at the University of Oslo believes the figures show that the state need to consider requiring that both genders are represented in the governing bodies of religious communities.
– For it seems obvious that nothing will happen by itself, says Strand, who asks herself how the situation is in other faiths.
Vårt Land clarifies that there were some mosques they were unable to uncover the composition of , and that it may take time before a newly elected board appear in the registers.
