The Norwegian chess team started without world champion Magnus Carlsen, but still won their opening match against Wales in the Chess Olympiad.

Aryan Tari and Frode Urkedal won their matches against Carl Strugnell and Tim Kett, while Jon Ludvig Hammer and Nicolai Getz played a draw in their matches.

Thus, it was a 3-1 victory for the Norwegian team in their first game of the tournament.
Carlsen and co. hope to improve the outcome of the Chess Olympiad two years ago. Then it was 29th place in Tromso. In 2008, they got 21st place.

– It is not likely for Norway to win this time either, said Carlsen before the tournament. He thinks it is important for the young team to build experience.

The tournament in Azerbaijan capital continues on Saturday.
