The Championships’ two best countries finished with two medals each in Sunday’s mass start competitions.
Marie Dorin Habert took a well paced gold ahead of German Laura Dahlmeier and Finnish Kaisa Mäkäräinen in second and third respectively, and won her sixth medal of these Championships.
Marte Olsbu was best amongst the Norwegians, trailing Habert by 43.9 seconds and coming in 7th. One of the day’s major surprises was Tiril Eckhoff, who after finishing a disappointing 24th declared that her season was over.
–I’m looking forward to going home to my mum, she told NRK after crossing the finish line. She also said that she’s so physically and mentally exhausted that she has no option other than to withdraw from next week’s World Cup events in Russia.
What happened just now?
In a nerve-wracking race Johannes Thingnes Bø grasped gold just ahead of Martin Fourcade, while Ole Einar Bjørndalen amassed yet another medal with his strong bronze.
After finishing just outside the podium in the other individual competitions, it must have been sublimely satisfying to the 22-year old from Stryn to secure a gold medal at home. READ MORE about A worthy conclusion to great Championships
