Air traffic declines slightly in 2015

This is a decrease of 0.2 per cent compared with the previous year.

“Avinor expects traffic figures for 2016 to be fairly similar to last year, with the possibility of a slight increase. This depends, of course, on the general market situation, and will also be affected by a possible new tax. The decline in the oil sector continues to affect air traffic at those airports that have a lot of offshore traffic and oil-related business travel,” says Avinor CEO Dag Falk-Petersen.
Levelling off as expected
“Norwegian aviation has not experienced a decline in traffic since the financial crisis in 2009. However, we have been aware that the rapid traffic growth we have enjoyed in some respects in recent years would level off at some point, so we are well prepared for this,” says Falk-Petersen. He adds that measures to increase capacity such as the expansion projects at Oslo Airport, Bergen Airport Flesland and Stavanger Airport Sola will lead to positive traffic development, most likely from 2017.

Traffic declines on domestic routes, international continues to increase
Domestic traffic in 2015 declined by 1 per cent, while international traffic continued to increase, rising by 1.5 per cent in 2015 compared with the previous year.

“When it comes to international traffic, we see an increase in passengers from the UK and USA. There is increased interest in Norway as a destination for leisure travel,” explains Falk-Petersen.

The number of passengers who travelled by charter plummeted by 11.8 per cent compared with 2014 and offshore-related traffic fell by 11.7 per cent.

Increase at Oslo Airport, decrease in Bergen, Trondheim and Stavanger
In total, almost 25 million passengers (24,678,195) flew via Oslo Airport in 2015. This is an increase of 1.7 per cent. International increased the most, by 3.1 per cent, while domestic rose 0.1 percent.

In 2015, more than 6 million passengers (6,020,866), a decline of 3.2 percent, travelled to and from Bergen Airport Flesland.

A total of 4.3 million passengers (4,352,721) travelled to or from Trondheim Airport in 2015. This is a decrease of 1.4 per cent.

4.5 million passengers (4,501,368) travelled via Stavanger Airport in 2015. This is a decrease of 4.7 percent.
