In order to increase the capacity of travelers outside the Schengen area, Avinor will expand Oslo Airport at Gardermoen by 30,000 square meters.

In three weeks, the development project “Extension Non-Schengen East” begins. Until summer 2022, efforts to expand the airport by 30,000 square meters will continue. The price tag for the planned work is set at 3.3 billion, Avinor announced Wednesday.

Next week, contractors and suppliers will be summoned to an information meeting before construction work starts.

The purpose of the expansion is to meet the increased passenger traffic to countries outside the Schengen area. Today, the airport can handle 5.5 million travelers annually, after enlargement, this will be expanded to 8 million.

“In recent years, traffic to and from outside Schengen has shown a significantly higher growth than traffic within. The fact that we facilitate this traffic by building a good and adaptable infrastructure is essential. This will give Norway an increase in competitiveness and high socio-economic gains,” said airport director Öyvind Hasaas of Avinor Oslo Airport.
