Hainan opens direct flight Oslo-Beijing

Hainan Airlines will be the first to fly regularly between Norway and China, starting in spring 2019. The route Oslo-Beijing will be operated three times a week.

– The new route from Beijing to Oslo is the first direct route between China and Norway, operated by a Chinese company. With this, we will get an improved route offer between China and Europe, says Mr. Liu Jichun, Vice President of Hainan Airlines.
– This new route will stimulate the development of good economic cooperation between China and Norway, as well as the Nordic region, Mr Liu continues.

Norway most popular for Chinese tourists

– This is a very good news for Norwegian business and tourism. Hainan is a major international airline and this will also mean that even more Chinese tourists will have the opportunity to experience all that Norway has to offer, says Director at Oslo Airport, Øyvind Hasaas.

From Beijing, connections to other Chinese and Asian destinations are very good.

– With Hainan, you get very good connections to Shanghai. There are also good connections to many other cities in China and Asia, which are pertinent destinations for both Norwegian tourists and, not least, Norwegian business, explains Hasaas.

Positive for the travel industry

Innovation Norway believes that direct routes to China are important for Norwegian travel industry and tourism.

– Together with Avinor and the tourism industry, we have worked long-term and targeted in the Chinese market to create interest for Norway. We have succeeded in this, but direct flights are essential for making Norway more relevant as a destination throughout the year. With the new route, we believe that tourists will spend more time and money on experiencing Norway, says Director of Tourism in Innovation Norway, Bente Bratland Holm.

Short travel time for Norwegian seafood

The demand for Norwegian seafood has skyrocketed in the last few years. The direct flight between Oslo and Beijing will entail that Norwegian fish will be available even fresher than today in shops and restaurants in the Chinese capital and surrounding areas.

– The direct flight to China will be very positive for the export of fresh Norwegian seafood to the fast-growing Chinese market. Fresh fish have short shelf life, and faster shipping time will ensure the quality of the goods. The route is expected to transport seafood to an annual value of NOK 200 million, says Freight Director in Avinor, Martin Langaas.

The route between Oslo and China will be operated by an A330-300 with 292 seats divided between 32 in business class and 260 in economy class, with departures three times a week.
