Plane had to land due to the smell of sour socks

A plane carrying 220 passengers, traveling from New York to Florida, had to be redirected due to the strong smell of sour socks in the cabin.

Several of the passengers on board Spirit Airlines Route 779 complained of sore throats and chest pain as a result of the strong smell, as they said, it smelled of sour socks, NBC reports.

The flight crew did not take any chances, changed course and landed in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. There the passengers were evacuated and eleven of them were taken to hospital. Their condition is not known.

Neither the airline nor anyone else has yet been able to give a response to where the smell came from, and the plane has now been searched by experts who did not find malicious socks or other sources of smell.

A new aircraft was still collected, and five hours later the passengers on Friday were in Fort Lauderdale.
