In Copenhagen libraries have removed a third of the books in favor of tools. – Maybe we will do the same in Oslo, the  library of the capital says.

The number of books taken out in Norwegian public libraries is decreasing. But by constantly renewing themselves, libraries have ensured that the number of visitors increases. Vårt Land has made a list of some of the non-traditional offerings that now has appeared on Norwegian libraries. Bibliotheca Tana is one of the several libraries where people can  borrow ski and snowboard gear, but the library also offers both skates, bonfire kettle, bike trailer and a 25-man lavvo.

In Oppegård you can borrow fishing rods at the library. The same applies in Askøy, where you can also borrow a canoe and lifejackets.
And if you look outside of Norway, it will, starting this autumn, be possible to borrow tools in libraries in Copenhagen.

– Tools sound exciting! Maybe we should allow people to borrow them at our library as well, communications manager  at Deichmanske Public Library in Oslo, Jørn Johansen, says. At the capital’s public libraries you can already borrow seeds for planting, 3D printers, musical instruments and guitar pedals, while at Asker library you can borrow artwork to put in your living room.

But  the   perhaps most special loan offer is offered by the libraries in Vestre Toten and Nesodden. At those libraries,  immigrants who want to become better acquainted with Norwegian language and culture, can borrow Norwegians to help them in this.
