The climate strike among Norwegian youths on March 22 gathered over 40,000 children and youth. Now the initiators will repeat the strike on May 24.
The climate strike in March was a success and gathered about twice as many young people as expected. In more than 70 places all over Norway, children and youths showed up even if it meant unexcused absence due to their participation.
In May, young people want to strike again for the climate. In a press release, the initiators – 15-year-old Tina Razafimandimby Våje and Deputy Chairman of Changemaker – Mari Hasle Einang (23) write – that the politicians’ response after the strike in March shows that they do not take the youth or the future seriously.
‘We demand action and a more ambitious and solidarity climate policy. The politicians’ answer is almost a hassle of the strike,’ it says.
Among the requirements from the young people is that at least 53 percent domestic emissions cuts by 2030 based on 1990 levels, at least NOK 65 billion in climate financing a year and no more exploration licenses for oil activities.
The strike is arranged in a collaboration between political youth parties, children’s and youth organizations and individuals. Among these are KFUK-KFUM Global, Green Youth, Nature and Youth, Changemaker and individuals in the Environmental Agents. The strike in May is a global strike that will mobilize children and young people around the world.
