Most accidents happen at home. In total, Norwegian hospitals treated 90,000 injuries after home accidents in 2017.
This is about a third of all accidental injuries that were treated at Norwegian hospitals this year.In total, the hospitals treated 280,000 injuries in accident in 2017 according to figures from the Norwegian Institute of Public Health (FHI).
The report,”The picture of injury in Norway” states that home accidents increase sharply with age,and especially among women.Among the oldest,a large part of the home accidents are due to falls.At the same time, it is only for those under the age of 20 in residential areas where the home is the most common place of injury.
‘’The accidents that lead to the most injuries are home accidents,falls and leisure accidents.These accidents are the ones we know least about.There is therefore,a need for a boost in the registration of claims information’’ said Eyvind Ohm, researcher at FHI.
There are external circumstances, such as cause, place of injury,and activity, which we especially lack information about. Today,this information is missing for all injuries that are treated by the emergency room and general practitioners. Such information
is also missing for half of all injuries that are treated in hospitals,but this has now been calculated by FHI.
Information on the circumstances of fatal accidents is also insufficiently registered in the Cause of Death Register.
Since there is no single, common injury register in Norway.FHI had compiled data from public health registers and claims registers in various sectors.
