Many patients find that sensitive information can be overheard by others in the waiting room at the doctor’s office according to a new survey from the Consumer Council.

The nationwide survey concluded that the duty of confidentiality is not adequately addressed in many Norwegian medical offices.

One of the reasons for the problem is, according to the Consumer Council, the way the doctor’s offices are designed wrote NRK news.

More than four out of ten respondents in the survey said that they find that others can see or hear sensitive information relayed in the doctor’s office.

The survey showed that patients omit important information, do not share information with health secretaries, and do not allow intimate tests.

‘’The fact that people choose not to provide information for this reason can pose a health risk. It is serious’’ said Anne Kristin Vie, Vice President of Consumer Affairs, to NRK.
