25 percent of the world’s hospitals and health centers do not have access to clean water for their patients due to lack of water pipes.

One in five hospitals also has a lack of toilets, according to a report by the World Health Organization (WHO) and UNICEF.

Imagine you give birth or bring a sick child to a health center that does not have clean water, toilets or wash basins. That’s the reality for millions of people every day, says WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus in a statement.

Based on surveys from 125 countries, UN organizations have also found that there are no proper facilities for hand hygiene in 20 percent of the world’s health centers.

Lack of sanitary facilities and hygiene is a problem in the least developed countries in the world, where only 55 percent of health centers have water.

According to the UN, about 17 million women each year have to give birth in such clinics with very poor facilities. Giving birth in hospitals where there is no water, sanitary facilities and where there is a lack of hygiene can lead to infections and death among mother and child.
