Just before summer vacation Health Directorate reminded that we have to reduce the consumption of salt in our daily life. The mid age man living in Northern countries could have up to 10 grams of salt a day and no more than 1.5 grams of salt per day.

During the last few years Health authorities strongly emphasize on reducing consumption of salt and recently new campaign started by Health Directorate.

Norwegians on average eat salt two times more that recommended level. The government’s recommendation is not to consume salt more than 5 grams a day which is about one teaspoon while many are eating tow times more.

– The high consumption of salt is one of today’s major health challenges among Norwegian, said by Linda Granlund who is the Division Director of Norwegian Directorate of Health.

The people have very low awareness on their own consumption

Many Norwegians are not aware well enough on how much salt they actually consume. A survey shows that 80 percent think we eat more salt than is recommended but less than 40 percent think it applies to their life.

Many do not know how much damage a high consumption of salt can do on their health, said by Granlund. Increased risk of hypertension, cardiovascular disease and stomach cancer are some of the health risks we could face by high consumption of salt in our daily life.

– Over 30 percent of Norway’s population has high blood pressure. High blood pressure can lead to cardiovascular disease, and cardiovascular disease is the most common cause of death in Norway, she said.

High salt consumption is harmful to women and men of all ages, but also for children, reminded by Health Directorate.
