The risk of developing cardiovascular diseases is higher for women who suffer from migraines, a new study shows.

The study shows that there is 39 percent higher risk of heart attack, 62 percent higher risk of stroke and 73 percent higher risk of chest pain when women suffer from migraine. The author of the study, Professor Tobias Kurth at the University Hospital Charité in Berlin, writes that women who suffer from migraine should be followed up because of the risk factor for cardiovascular disease, according to a research article in the British Medical Journal.

The study is based on over 115,000 respondents who were tracked for over 22 years in a nursing study.

– There have been indications that there is a relationship between cardiovascular diseases and migraine before, so it’s not surprising. But what is surprising how much migraine seems to increase the risk of developing these diseases,  Lars Stovner, professor of neurology and head of the National expertise service for headaches, says to the newspaper Dagbladet.
Approximately 10 percent of Norwegians suffer from migraine.
