On Friday, one case of measles was detected in Oslo. The person was infected in Europe, and the Norwegian Institute of Public Health warned passengers who took the same plane.

People who may have been exposed to infection have been contacted by the Norwegian Institute of Public Health.

Especially passengers who were on Norwegian route DY 1787 from Lisbon to Oslo on Wednesday 24 April were warned, and they were offered vaccinations at the emergency room in Oslo.

In Norway, there is high vaccination coverage and measles infection is no longer as ongoing as before. However, in some European countries, vaccination coverage is much lower, and several countries currently have an ongoing infection.

The Norwegian Institute of Public Health therefore encouraged parents to speed up MMR vaccination for young children when traveling abroad.

‘’The measles vaccine is very effective. Very rarely, however, vaccinated people can become infected. This was so in this case, but as a rule, the disease will be milder, and the infectivity will be less’’ said chief physician, Trude Arnesen of the Norwegian Institute of Public Health.

Measles is a highly contagious viral disease that causes a rash with fever and can lead to a severe consequences on occasion. Thevirus is transmitted through droplet infestation and can potentially be fatal to malnourished children, children who have impaired health, or infants who are too young to be vaccinated.

If one is infected, there is no specific treatment.
