Sickness absence is greatest in nursing care

Nursing workers, nurses and nursery assistants have the highest sickness absence, while office workers and ICT leaders have the lowest absence, showed new figures from Statistics Norway (SSB).

 

Statistics from SSB, which for the first time published statistics on sickness absence by occupation, showed that there are major differences from occupation to occupation in the first quarter of the year.

Nursing staff, nursery assistants and nurses have a sickness absence of 9.2, 9.1 and 8.6% respectively. Cleaners, primary and secondary school teachers and truck, bus and tram drivers are among the professional groups that follow closely behind.

At the other end of the scale, there are sergeants with a sickness absence of only 1.6%.The sergeants are closely followed by other officers, leaders of ICT units, common soldiers,physicists and civil engineers, all of whom have a sickness absence of 2.5% or lower.

The total sickness absence in the first quarter of the year is 6.4%, according to seasonal and influenza-adjusted figures from SSB There is a slight decline from the quarter before,and the fourth quarter of 2017, when sick leave was 6.5%.

Sickness absence nationally amounted to 870,785 lost days in the first quarter of this year.This is an increase of 2,530 working days, or 0.3% compared with the first quarter of 2017.
