Talk about security around the dinner table

These days, all households will receive a brochure with concrete suggestions for what to wear in the house to be ready for events such as extreme weather or power outages.

 

The Directorate for Social Security and Preparedness (DSB) launched the campaign on self-preparedness together with Oslo municipality earlier this autumn.

“We have received many inquiries from people who want to have a brochure that they can discuss around the dinner table” explained DSB director, Cecilie Daae, to NTB news.

In several languages

The brochure is in Bokmål, Nynorsk, Sami and English.The material is also available on the website: safetyweb.no.

“Many people are not well prepared to manage without power, water, and the internet for a few days. For most of us, it is possible to take better control some simple tips” said Daae.

She pointed out that we have become more vulnerable because we rely on power and 24-hour shops.

“We have built a lot of vulnerability into the way we live” said the DSB director.

Will not spread fear

Cecilie Daae emphasized that DSB does not want to deal with any terror campaign.

“Together with 40 different authorities, we have given knowledge-based advice. It’s not to scare the Norwegian population, but it’s important that people also take a responsibility themselves” she said.

The DSB director encouraged families to talk about things that may happen, such as the consequences of extreme weather, so that one can be mentally prepared and have a “plan B” in such situations.

Equipment for three days

According to DSB, one should have enough to handle surviving for three days. For each person, this includes nine liters of water, two packs of crackers, a pack of oatmeal, three boxes of dinner, or three bags of dry food, and three boxes of long-lasting foods.

DSB also advised us to have a barbecue or gas cooker,warm clothes, a blanket and sleeping bag, some cash,and iodine tablets for use in nuclear disasters.
