The Chinese mobile phone giant Huawei has climbed the smartphone market to take 2nd place behind world-leader Samsung; sending Apple down to 3rd.

With Huawei overtaking Apple, this marks the first time since 2010 that American based Apple was not among the top-two global smartphone manufacturers.

International Data Corp. reports that South Korean Samsung sold 71.5 million mobile phones in 2018’s second quarter, with Huawei & Apple selling 54.2 & 41.3 million phones respectively.

Samsung enjoys nearly a 30% global market share, Huawei earns a 16% share and Apple holds about 12% of the world smartphone market.

In total, 342 million smartphones were sold this second quarter, down 1.8% as compared against 2017’s 2nd quarter statistics.

Apple reports its best June 2nd quarter ever, recording $53.3 billion in revenue on the back of 41.3 million iPhone sales.
