In 2015, Norway imported oil for NOK 3.5 billion. The oil comes from countries that Norway would rather not compare themselves with, and Statoil and ExxonMobil are the ones who import the most.

According to the newspaper Stavanger Aftenblad the imports of the crude oil happens at the refinery at Mongstad. Here the bulk of the oil comes from the Norwegian continental shelf, but Statoil also need to import oil with different characteristics than the Norwegian oil. They don’t ,however, want to specify where the crude oil comes from
for commercial and competitive reasons. Imported oil will satisfy and optimize our production at Mongstad. We therefore need the appropriate grade to create the products that customers want, said press officer Elin A. Isaksen at Statoil .
According to figures from Statistics Norway most of the imported oil comes from Russia. Then follows  Congo, Cameroon, Equatorial Guinea, United Kingdom, Nigeria and Angola.
Isaksen emphasizes that Statoil do not trade with countries under boycott.
Arild Hermstad in ‘Future in our Hands’ is critical to this trade and believes that it may be problematic where the oil comes from.
– We have a trade conflict with Russia , yet we import significant amounts of oil form them. Equatorial Guinea is one of the most delinquent countries in Africa, he says.

ExxonMobil does not want to comment on which countries they import crude oil from either.
