Cancer costs society over 40 billion kr a year, according to a recent survey.
According to Professor Ivar Sønby Kristiansen, who conducted the study for the consulting firm Oslo Economics, cancer costs society between 17 and 18 billion in healthcare and as much in production.
“In addition, there are some costs we do not know much about, like what families contribute in care,” he says to NRK news.
More importantly, however, is what we cannot put a number on, according to Kristiansen: the value of years of life lost to society.
“We don’t have good figures, but we can talk about values of around 350 billion,” he said.
