A change in legislation that was introduced two years ago, has led to fathers today having a reduced share of the parental benefit period, while the mothers’ share has increased.

In statistics from Nav, it is stated that over the course of the 1st to 3rd quarter of this year around 48,800 men and 77,300 women were receiving parental benefits.
This is a reduction from the same period last year of 4.1 per cent for males and an increase of 3.2 percent for women.
Nav notes that this must be seen in the context of regulatory change in 2014 when the number of weeks of father’s quota was reduced from 14 to 10 weeks, and 4 weeks were transferred from the father to the common period.
In addition, the mothers quota was reduced by 4 weeks.
Together, this represents an increase of the joint period of 8 weeks, and it is the mother who mainly uses the common period.
It was mainly women in Oslo who received parental benefits in the first three quarters, followed by Hordaland, Akershus, Rogaland and South Trondelag.
