The Christiania Belysning chain is closing 21 of its 40 stores. Around 50 employees are affected by the closures.
“We will close 21 of our 40 stores. The stores that are closing down are the ones with a lack of profitability and less customer traffic,” says CEO Maiken Skirstad Mo of Christiania Belysning to NTB.
She says the closures mainly come from outside central eastern Norway. None of the chain’s three stores in Oslo will close.
“We receive goods from manufacturers in Europe and have high logistics costs associated with this. It is expensive to transport goods to single stores that are far from other stores,” says Mo.
Nettavisen initially wrote about the closures.
Around 50 employees will lose their jobs as a result of the closures.
“This is about the fact that the retail trade is changing. We have long been working on a restructuring that is about developing ourselves as the leading lighting expert in Norway. We have been profitable in the past, but trading patterns have changed and e-commerce is growing. So people aren’t as addicted to going to their local lamp shop,” says Mo.
