Fewer reindeer in Norway last year

The total number of reindeer dropped by more than 20,000 animals in the previous operating year compared with the previous year.
Last operating year  75,400 reindeer were slaughtered, which totaled 1,750 tonnes, according to the resource accounts for reindeer herding.
Nationally the number of reindeer in spring herds went down from 232,900 in 2013-2014 to 211,600 in 2014-2015. The largest decline was in  the West Finnmark reindeer grazing area.
The total given loss for the operating year was 93,300 animals.
Reindeer herding plays an important part in the Sami culture, Sami identity, Sami language and the  maintenance of traditional Sami knowledge about nature.
