Fred. Olsen Renewables AS has been granted permission to build Gilja Wind farms in Gjesdal , Rogaland. The plant will produce the electricity equivalent of the consumption of 20,000 homes.
The Norwegian Water and Energy Directorate (NVE) had authorized the project, but this decision was appealed by local cabin owners, nature and leisure organizations and the County of Rogaland. Now the Ministry for Oil and Energy has decided the appeal should be dismissed.
– Gilja is one of the best wind power projects the Ministry has processed. The project will help to significantly increase energy production and provides employment in a region that is in a difficult situation. I wish Fred Olsen good luck with the continued efforts to realize this project, said the Minister Tord Lien.
The Ministry stated that they have considered both environmental impacts and leisure interests and found that there were grounds for granting a license.
– The Ministry has emphasized the good technical and economic conditions of the project, plus that the conflicts with biodiversity is less than what one would normally expect with such a large wind projects, said the Ministry.
