Increasing stock of diesel passenger cars

The share of passenger cars running on diesel is still increasing, while the share running on petrol has fallen. The number of electric cars is growing rapidly, and constituted 2.6 per cent of the total stock of passenger cars at the end of 2015.

At the end of 2015, 1.24 million passenger cars were running on diesel; 4.8 per cent more than the previous year. The number of passenger cars running on petrol fell by 2.5 per cent in the same period and constituted 49.7 per cent of the total passenger stock as per 31 December 2015. The number of electric passenger cars increased from 38 600 to 69 100. In total, 2.6 million passenger cars were registered at the end of 2015; 2.1 per cent more than the year before.

Most electric cars in Akershus
Twenty per cent, or 13 655, of the electric passenger cars were registered in Akershus. About one half were registered in the three counties Akershus, Oslo and Hordaland.

Most Volkswagens
Out of 2.6 million passenger cars, 370 000 were a Volkswagen. This was equal to 14.3 per cent of the total passenger stock. Toyota had a share of 12.8 per cent.

No change in average age
At the end of 2015, Norwegian passenger cars were 10.5 years old on average. The average age has remained the same for the last 6 years. In 2014, the average age of passenger cars in selected EU countries was 7.4 years.

Oldest cars in Oppland county
At the end of 2015, the average age of passenger cars registered in Oppland county was 13.0 years. The newest passenger cars were registered in Oslo, with an average age of 7.8 years.

Most vans run on diesel
More than 92 per cent of vans were running on diesel. The number of registered vans at the end of 2015 was 450 000. Out of these, 1 808 were electric vans.

Fewer cars and vans scrapped for refund
In 2015, approximately 136 000 passenger cars and vans were scrapped for a refund; a decrease of 6 per cent compared to the previous year. The average age at the time of scrapping was 18.4 years for passenger cars and 15.5 years for vans.
