Large demand for store jobs worries experts

Experts are concerned about the large influx of applicants for vacancies at grocery chains  . Last year Kiwi got  65,352 applications for 1,347 vacancy announcements.

That chain received nearly 50 applications per advertised position, writes Dagens Næringsliv. The positions were mainly part-time positions.
– There’s a huge interest in working in shops, especially as a part-time job among young people,  communications manager  in  Coop, Harald Kristiansen,  says.  Communications manager in Kiwi Kristine Aakvaag Arvin think people find it more attractive to work in  grocery stores, but says that the huge interest  may also have to do with the fact that there are now fewer jobs available for people without formal qualifications.

Professor of Strategy at BI, Amir Sasson, and labor and service director Kjell Hugvik in Nav say they are concerned about the large increase in the number of applicants. Sasson believes lower investment will make entering the labor market more difficult for many without formal training.

– It’s a cause for great concern that there are many applicants for these jobs, because it shows that there are many people who need work and do not have a job,  Hugvik says. He believes it shows that there are too few jobs, adding that the most important thing young people can do is to finish videregående skole( journ.: similar to junior college or the sixth forms of comprehensive school).
