In 26 minutes 126,225 salmon died during a delousing at a fish farm at Frøya in Sør-Trøndelag.
Special Inspector and veterinary Aud Skrudland FSA told the newspaper Adresseavisen that she did not know of a greater single incident of mass death of salmon than this, which took place last November.
– This is a very big and serious case of mass death. The incident shows how great the risk of death is when treating them for lice, she says.
FSA has not yet concluded on the reason for the deaths of such a large amount of salmon . According to farming company SalMar’s own report, the incident was likely due to the fish being overexposed to hydrogen peroxide.
– It is highly regrettable that such an event occurs. The fish had good health status, and the delousing was performed by well trained personnel and supervised by the fish health service, CEO Roger Bekken in Salmar says.
The 126,255 salmon amounted to over 300 tons of fish.
