Last year, 75,500 people residing abroad received payments from Nav. This is 2,100 fewer than in 2017. In total, they received NOK 7.2 billion.

Over half of the money – 4.4 billion – went to retired pensioners. Thereafter, disability benefits follow with NOK 1.6 billion.

Norwegian citizens living abroad received NOK 4.3 billion in 2018. Foreign nationals received NOK 2.9 billion.

A total of 1.65 per cent of the total payments from Nav last year went to persons resident abroad. The year before, the proportion was 1.66 per cent, but the total payments abroad increased by NOK 87 million from 2017 to 2018.

Adjusted for inflation and as a share of the total payments from Nav, payments abroad are lower in 2018 than the year before. The decline is due to the fact that fewer people move from Norway and that fewer take benefits out of the country, says Director of Performance Kjersti Monland in Nav.

80 percent of the money went to countries in Europe, with Sweden peaking at NOK 2.4 billion. NOK 783 million went to persons resident in Spain and NOK 634 million to Denmark. Thailand surpassed Poland as number four, with 393 million paid out in 2018.
