In February airline Norwegian notified that they will double their fleet in five years, a nature reserve called Naturvernforbundet has calculated that CO2 emissions will be more than all Norway’s cars released in 2014.
A growth rate of 20 percent every year for five years, with an increase in long-haul routes, such Norwegian presented plans for in February, will lead to an overall increase of 7.1 million tonnes of CO2 per year within five years, says Naturvernforbundet to Dagsavisen.
– By comparison, the almost 2.6 million passenger cars in Norway put out 5.5 million tonnes of CO2 equivalents in 2014, says Technical Manager Holger Schlaupitz.
He says aircraft seat fee is a step in the right direction and that people should look at the possibility to go on vacation at nearby destinations, where you can go without having to fly.
– Norwegian’s fleet is one of the world’s youngest and most environmentally friendly. Beyond that, we are also interested in filling the tank with biofuels, writes press officer Daniel Kirchoff of the company in an email to the newspaper.
