Up to 2022, 28,000 new employees in the oil industry will be needed, according to the research institute, IRIS.

“The IRIS report shows that there will be a great need for new employment in the oil and gas industry in the future. This is good news for those who have chosen a science or technology education,” said Karl Eirik Schjøtt-Pedersen, CEO of Norwegian oil and gas.

According to the study, conducted on behalf of the Norwegian oil and gas industry organization, nearly 48,000 jobs in direct petroleum-based activities have disappeared due to the past demanding years in the industry. Some of these are to be replaced, while the industry needs to replace those who retire on natural retirement pensions. It is estimated that approximately 18,000 new jobs will be needed just to replace them.

“There has been a demanding transformation for the industry, with a sharp fall in employment. At the same time it is a pleasure that the arrows have now turned. We can never predict job guarantees, but the analysis from IRIS is an important signal,”said Schjøtt-Pedersen.
