Future shipping will take place on unmanned ships. It will be cheaper, reduce the risk of accidents, and cut fuel consumption by 10-15 percent, think the manager for Rolls-Royce.

Put the captain and crew on the shore, it is possible to construct ships differently, let sensors and big data solutions obtain information and develop ship intelligence that is able to make decisions for its self.

– We believe it is possible to bring down the cost of maritime transport by 22 percent by implementing a transition to unmanned ships, urged President Mikael Mäkinen in ship construction and engine giant Rolls-Royce, when business leaders, scientists, politicians and environmentalists recently discussed future shipping under Ny-Ålesund symposium.

Unmanned ships will be lighter in weight, have reduced wind resistance, and do not need residential sections. Cooled natural gas (LNG) in combination with batteries replace the heavy oil and diesel fuel, and also makes future shipping greener, think Rolls-Royce.
