New figures show that SAS’s passenger traffic increased by four percent in August compared with last year. At the same time, almost 400,000 more people traveled with Norwegian last month than with SAS.

July this year was the first month the traffic figures of Norwegian had been higher than the traffic figures of SAS  and the trend continues in August.

2.5 million passengers traveled with SAS in August, compared with nearly 2.9 million passengers who traveled with Norwegian. Earlier this week,  Norwegian presented its August figures, which showed  an increase of twelve percent in the number of passengers when compared with the same month last year.

SAS figures show that the scheduled traffic increased by 12 percent compared with August last year. Intercontinental traffic will increase by 25 percent for the fiscal year 2015-2016, the company said in a statement.

According to analyst Jacob Pedersen in Sydbank is not unlikely that Norwegian will take the place as the largest airline in Scandinavia over the longer term.

– If SAS don’t increase their ambitions for  growth markedly, Norwegian will be the largest company in Scandinavia in about two to three years, the analyst news agency Ritzau said in August.
