If charging electric cars occurs when the power consumption is low, no extra capacity is needed in the network according to a report made for NVE.
DNV GL and Pöyry Management Consulting had made the report, “Costs in the electricity grid – Gains from coordinated charging of electric cars” on behalf of the Norwegian Water Resources and Energy Directorate (NVE).
‘’All electric cars today are produced with smart charging solutions. This means that you yourself control when you want to charge the car. Now we need instruments that motivate people to charge them when power consumption is generally low, for example at night’’ said waterjet and energy director, Kjetil Lund.
The report also estimated the need for investments if the charging occurs when the capacity in the power grid is already strained. The projections show that there will then be a need for investments in the electricity grid of about NOK 11 billion.
The projections are intended for a scenario where all passenger car
transport is electrified, and based on representative network areas that represent the metropolitan, suburban, and district areas with, among otherthings, agriculture and cabins.
