Norway must accept that emissions from individual firms or some sectors will increase if production is more environmentally friendly and cuts emissions in Europe as a whole, says Prime Minister Erna Solberg.
She came in its half-yearly news conference on air obligations Norway and the EU has undertaken subject to quotas sector, namely that it should be cut by 40 percent by 2030.
Specifically Solberg showed that increased production of ammonia in Norway will increase emissions.
– It means that since we are successful in traditional industries, the emissions will go up. But emissions per unit will go down, she said.
The argument rests on the kind of production abroad will result in greater greenhouse gas emissions per unit.
– The winner is those who emit less per unit. Then we can be winners there. Then it may be that emissions in Norway are going up, but that emissions in the EU goes down, says Solberg.
– It is important to remember this. Otherwise, we get into a situation where we become so myopic in emissions that we put into Norwegian industrial jobs.
The goal must be that we are the most energy efficient in production, not that we put into the industry in Norway.
