Every eighth shopping bag with food goes straight to the garbage cans of the consumers. The food industry wants to help us to throw less food.

Over 42 kg of  edible food on average per Norwegian were thrown away  last year, according to recent figures.

The food thrown away equals 5.800 kroner’s worth for an average household, according to figures from The food industry project ForMat. However the amount of food thrown away has been reduced since 2010.

The project, which has made a survey of the scope of food thrown away in Norway the last six years, will present its final report at a conference Tuesday.

The industry has not reached the goal of helping to reduce the amount of food thrown away by 25 percent over the past six years.

12 percent less food in kilograms per capita was thrown away last year than in 2010. A total of 355,000 tonnes of  edible food  were thrown away by the food industry, wholesalers, grocery and households in 2015.

You and I are bad

Regular people  are the ones who throw away edible food most often. Residues from pots and plates as well as fruit and vegetables end up in the trash too often .

A small consolation is that we have become a little better at eating up our food. Most people threw 9 percent less food away at home last year than in 2010 but  consumers still account for 60 percent of the edible food thrown away.
