Over a hundred lawyers from several countries have signed a letter in which they ask the Prime Minister to intervene in a child welfare agency case in Naustdal, where a Norwegian-Romanian couples were deprived of their five children.

The lawyers claim in a letter to Prime Minister Erna Solberg, that the custody and freedom of religion to the Norwegian-Romanian couple were violated when the child welfare agency took their five children in November last year, writes newspaper Dagen. The parents are being charged with domestic violence.

– We have made us familiar with the facts of the case and are deeply troubled that the taking of the children was motivated by the Christian faith of the family, according to the letter. The family are Pentecostals.

The lawyers who have signed the letter are from the United States, Czech Republic, Germany and South Korea. They believe that the children’s religious identity is not being taken care of and they react to that the siblings have been split. Solberg is asked to ensure that the youngest child stays with the family and that the other four are immediately returned.

– There is no legal basis in the child law for care orders on the basis of religion, but it is illegal to hit children, said Children and Equality Minister Solveig Horne to the newspaper in January.
