The Norwegian Police Academy imported 14 German Shepherds from Denmark without the appropriate permissions from the Norwegian Food Safety Authority (Mattilsynet – FSA).

‘The Police Academy must have an exemption from the FSA for importing police dogs to Norway. The last exemption expired on 27 December 2014, but since that date, 14 puppies have been imported into to Norway’, wrote Politiforum (Police Forum).

‘It is regrettable that we have imported dogs without the necessary paperwork in order. We are police and must follow the laws and regulations’, said Siw Hansen Thokle, director of higher-education (videreutdanning) at the Police Academy.

The Regional Director of the FSA in Oslo, Akershus and Østfold, Karina Kaupang, said that the organization have asked for additional information about the imported dogs.

‘We gather as much information as possible to make an assessment. We have not taken a decision yet upon if, and/or how, we will respond’.

The Norwegian Bureau for the Investigation of Police Affairs will consider whether they should look into the matter. Three of the illegally imported dogs have been returned to Denmark to receive vaccinations.

The remaining eleven have been in Norway for at least six months and have therefore passed the period of danger of infection, so do not need vaccinations.
