A 17-year-old Afghan boy was charged with the murder of an 18-year-old man in Vadsø, Saturday. The boy came to Norway as a minor asylum seeker in 2015.
The 17 year old will be detained in custody while awaiting sentencing on Monday or Tuesday, chief executive Ylva Helen Kvikstad stated at a press conference in Vadsø, Sunday evening.
– He has a temporary stay in Norway. He came to Norway as a minor asylum seeker in 2015, Kvikstad stated.
“We take into account the psychological state of the boy, and we will ask for a judicial observation,” said the prosecutor.
In consultation with the defense lawyer, the police have decided not to question the boy on Sunday.
The police will attempt to question the accused during Monday.
– Unknown motive
It was Saturday night that 18-year-old Håvard Pedersen from Vadsø was stabbed inside the Coop Byggmix in the city. The police were notified of the incident just before 22:00 and they quickly arrived at the scene. The 18-year-old man, who was at work, was declared dead shortly thereafter.
The motive for the murder is still unknown, and it is too early to speculate if the 18-year-old was a random victim, according to the police.
