30 people died on Norwegian roads this summer. That is two fewer than in the three summer months last year.

Among the 30 who were killed in June, July and August are 19 men and 11 women.Half died in passenger cars while 11 were killed on motorcycles. This was shown in the Norwegian Road Safety Authority’s preliminary review of summer accidents.

In August, seven lives lost in traffic, which is five fewer than in August last year.
“We could be heading for the lowest number of people killed on Norwegian roads in 70 years. But this is about far more than numbers and statistics.Every accident is a big tragedy for those who are affected.

Although the deaths have declined, we unfortunately do not have the same positive trend in the number of traffic accidents and the development of the numbers of those severely injured in traffic. We are following the ambitious goals set,” said Guro Ranes of the Norwegian Public Roads Administration.

During the first eight months of the year in 2018, 63 died in traffic, which is four less than at the same time last year.

Finnmark is the only county in the country that has not had any traffic fatalities so far this year.

“We are heading for the lowest numbers for 71 years. We must go back to 1947, when 94 died, to find similarly low numbers,’’said Ranes.

In 2017, 106 people died in traffic despite relatively many killed in October, November and December.Continuing 2018 as it has begun, according to the Vegvesen’s (Norwegian Road Safety Authority’s) forecast, there could be below 100 killed on Norwegian roads this year.
