662 passengers were unsecured and 370 passengers were charged a fee when the Norwegian Public Roads Administration carried out country-wide seatbelt controls last week.

The remaining 292 passengers who were not wearing a seatbelt when the checks were carried out, were not fined due to uncertainties in the observations. During the nationwide control, a total of 14,500 passengers were controlled throughout the country, distributed on 745 buses.

“Controls and fines are not important to us in themselves, but are an important means of making even more people make traffic-safe choices, both for themselves and their fellow passengers,” said Ingrid Heggebø Lutnæs, Head of Department in the Norwegian Public Roads Administration.

In 2016, oral warnings and advocations ended, and the Norwegian Public Roads Administration began issuing fines of NOK 1,500 for bus passengers who do not use a safety belt.

131 people have died in bus accidents in Norway since 1977. No passengers have died in buses in 2018.
