Anyone who dies in a traffic accident shall go through a forensic autopsy as part of clarifying the cause of the accident, states the government.

“Knowing the cause of a fatal accident can be important for the next of kin. This knowledge can also help us prevent future accidents and loss of life in traffic. It is an important factor for public health,” says health minister Bent Høie (H).

The Government is now presenting a bill on mandatory autopsy, which entails changes in both the Autopsy Act and the Road Traffic Act. The aim is to provide more knowledge and information on the causes of traffic accidents in order to better target the work on traffic safety.

“We have a goal of zero killed and severely injured in traffic. In the effort to prevent traffic accidents, it is important to understand why the accidents occur. Autopsy of all killed in traffic accidents can give us important knowledge that can help save more lives,” says Transport Minister Jon Georg Dale (FRP).
