Those April showers have not been coming Bergen’s way. To find an equally dry April in Bergen as this year, one must go all the way back to 1891, according to Bergens Tidende.
During the first three weeks of the month, only 1.4 millimetres of rain fell in Bergen, compared to 114 millimetres, which is the normal rainfall in April.
Last time rainfall was measured so low was in 1891, 128 years ago. Then, according to Bergens Tidende newspaper, 0.2 millimetres of precipitation (rain) was measured during the same period.
Only once since then has it been even drier, in 1888 when not one raindrop was measured during April’s first two weeks.
The dry record for April in Bergen dates from 1918 when only 3.7 millimetres of rainfall fell in the fourth month of the year.
Standardised measurements were introduced in Norway in the 1860s.
